Not All HDTV is Created Equal November 2009
UHD stands for Ultra-High Definition .This is next big thing in high Definition TV. UHD which supplies from four to 16 times the resolution of 1080P. 1080P which is stated as 1920 pixels by 1080 pixels will be supplanted by UHD which is given as 7680 by 4320 (8K) or 3840 pixels by 2160 pixels better known as 4K. The technology will begin in commercial or professional applications over the next 5 to 10 years and then trickle down to the consumer markets.
In addition to the increased resolution, the UHD will also provide an increase in the audio. Taking a 9.2 current system to 22.2 multi-channel, three dimensional sound. A clear expansion on the capabilities of today's consumer and commercial systems.
Digital broadcasters will start offering the UHD content to market between 2017 and 2022 and believe that 5% of households in Europe will be equipped to view UHDTVs by 2021 and increase to 28.2% by 2025. Japan will be among the early adopters.
Comment ..... The question is "Do we need or can we use the extra resolution in a typical room within our homes? One of the first elements in design is to know the boundaries and limits of the materials at hand. Some rooms are perfectly correct with a 42" 720P and others require a 50" or greater at a higher resolution. Few projects request the 103" or 150" models available, whether that is due to room boundaries or monetary boundaries. Technology is ever expanding.
