    PROJECTOR TURF    June 2001

Projectors ...... especially the DLP (Digital Light Processing) type are making very heavy footwork over the conventional 3-Gun (Analog) and LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) types of video image projectors. Most of the impact is in small to medium room sizes and there are a number of reasons, not just one in particular. Some advantages include, easy setup, small footprint, light weight, and native resolution capabilities.

The DLP's can produce a SVGA or better, native resolution for an easy-on-the-pocket amount in comparison to what was available just a few short years ago when 3-Gun machines ruled and expensive picture enhancers were trying to satisfy the public's general need for a better picture. What's more interesting .... across the board, Line Doublers and Scalars have come down to a price point where the entire package, Projector, Screen and Scalar, can be had for about the price of the scalar alone when compared to those same prices of just a few short years ago. This is a major cost advantage for the average home owner, planning a Home Theater for family and friends. Also an average eight (8) foot ceiling can normally support a ninety (90) to one hundred (100) inch diagonal screen.

DLP's all have one thing in common, a  DLP chip invented by Texas Instrument. That is where the similarities end. Different make up in the color wheel, the number of color wheels, the sync process, the number of DLP chips in the unit and other internal and closely held secrets are abound throughout the industry. The bottom line is an excellent picture for your money. Most of the upper end DLP projectors can accept HDTV signals as they stand, without any external help.

Custom Audio-Video Systems relies on a number of models as well as projector companies and use each in a manner that best suits the specific need and budget. Choosing a projector relies on room dimensions and other parameters which come into play when designing and planning a theater.
