SONY To RELEASE OLED TECHNOLOGY September 2007
By Robert Lieto
SONY has just announced that they will be releasing a OLED based flat screen for the 2007 XMAS Season. The screen will be 3mm deep and the total screen size to be 11" Diagonal. They stated a 10,000 Hour viewing life for approximately $1700 USD.
OLED technology has been around for quite a while and is the preferred screen used in the mobile phone industry. From what I have read, it is a viable technology but, not quite yet perfected. It seems that different companies have a lock, if you will, on the making of different colors, with Blue being the color with the shortest life span. OLED technology when perfected will allow a screen to be wrapped around a large column giving the display full 360 degree exposure for advertising and such. Companies like Dow Corning, Kodak, Samsung and LG are also in the race.
SONY announced the TV display with great fanfare and hung its hat on this technology to get it back in the race and get its name back where it was in the late seventies and early eighties. Today SONY does not have a technology it can call its own. All of its LED and Plasma displays are made by others. For a company that believed in vertical assembly, it needs a product to control. I will be awaiting the response from first time buyers of the OLED to see if it measures up.
